Alex L'Heureux Wins the Steeplechase at UNC
Alex L'Heureux is a native Canadian who is working towards his Olympic debut in the Steeplechase in 2008. He already has Patriot League championships in the 800, the mile, the outdoor steeplechase and was the cross-country runner up in 2002. That’s quite a list of accomplishments but given Alex's ambition as an athlete, that's not enough. Alex has his sites set on international recognition.
Alex is running for the USA Track & Field Elite Club, Carrboro Athletic Club/Fleet Feet and is under the watchful eye of former Olympian Joan Nesbit. Alex goes to Conscious Fitness to do his strength workouts and his strength and conditioning coach is John Cowell of Conscious Fitness in Raleigh, NC.
According to John, "Alex is training to improve his explosiveness and improve his running economy. He typically trains with me 2-3 times a week and this is coordinated with all of his running workouts to make sure he isn’t exposed to too much training volume and overtraining."
As an endurance athlete, maintaining optimal body composition is critical. Alex has to work hard to maintain (but not gain) his muscle mass through the competitive season, stay injury free and healthy. His strength training is an essential adjunct to his running workouts.
